Web/Eadvocacy/Program Intern

EARTHWORKS seeks a web-savvy intern to help --

  • build and maintain our websites,
  • increase the scale and effectiveness of our e-activism/Web 2.0 efforts,
  • and research and write for our campaigns.

EARTHWORKS is an environmental advocacy nonprofit dedicated to protecting communities and the environment.  We focus on minimizing the destructive impacts of resource extraction from metals like gold and copper, and fuels like oil and gas.  We foster responsible stewardship throughout the materials life cycle by:

  • encouraging consumers and jewelry retailers to use their buying power to help clean up dirty metals through our No Dirty Gold campaign (www.nodirtygold.org)
  • talking with mining companies to develop more responsible extraction practices through the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (www.responsiblemining.net)
  • improving federal mining laws (www.earthworksaction.org)
  • improving state laws to protect public health and landowners from irresponsible drilling through the Oil & Gas Accountability Project (www.ogap.org)
  • encouraging recycling through our Recycle My Cell Phone campaign (www.recyclemycellphone.org)

EARTHWORKS is a relatively small organization (15 staff).  Consequently, we rely heavily on our interns for substantive work -- they become extensively familiar with how a nonprofit advocacy organization operates.

The web/eadvocacy/program internship requires a candidate who is

  • self-motivated,
  • organized,
  • a clear writer,
  • good researcher,
  • committed to environmental protection.

Successful candidates will have:

  • basic HTML skills,
  • the ability to complete projects on short timelines.

Nice but not necessary:

  • familiarity with photo manipulation software such as Photoshop;
  • previous research/advocacy experience;
  • familiarity with Content Management System based websites.

This intern position is located at our headquarters in Washington, D.C. and reports to the Research/IT Director. Salary is $900 per month.  Positions are open until filled.  If you are a student, we will be glad to help you earn credit for your work.  We require a 3 month minimum commitment.  Start and end dates are flexible. Applications should consist of a résumé, cover letter, and short writing sample.  Please send to:
