Promoting Corporate Accountability
We work with partners from around the world to hold mining corporations accountable to local communities. Some examples of our work:
- Monitoring the mining operations of Denver-based Newmont Corporation, the world's second largest gold mining company. Newmont has come under increasing scrutiny due to its checkered track record at operations in Peru, Indonesia, Ghana, New Zealand, the United States, Uzbekistan, and Romania. With our support, a shareholder resolution in 2007 forced the company to review its community relations. The 2009 report of this review, though flawed, confirmed a "consistent lack of accountability in the implementation of Newmont's community relations objectives" Hear from communities affected by Newmont.
Read the New York Times, Denver Post, and other recent coverage about Newmont Mining.
- We support the work of partners who are dealing with U.S. and Canadian mining firms such as Meridian Gold (Argentina), Gabriel Resources (Romania), Barrick (Chile), Anglo Gold Ashanti (Ghana), Ascendant Copper (Ecuador), Central Sun Mining (Costa Rica), and others.
