Montanore Mine Proposal

The proposed Montanore mine is an underground copper/silver project 18 miles south of Libby, Montana that would be constructed on lands in the Kootenai National Forest. Mine's Management of Spokane Washington, is seeking permitting to construct and operate the mine. Similar to the proposed Rock Creek mine, Montanore would extract ore from beneath the mountains, meadows, and alpine lakes of the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness. If approved, the project would:

  • dewater and degrade the East Fork of Bull River the most important bull trout stronghold in the region,
  • generate 13 million gallons a year of polluted mine water in perpetuity.
  • and destroy 27,000 acres of grizzly bear habitat.
